Whiteheads are another form of acne and they are formed from a build-up of dead skin cells, oil and bacteria which happens when they get trapped inside one of your pores.
Many people think whiteheads contain pus and try to squeeze them, but this is not the case and you definitely should avoid squeezing whiteheads whenever possible.
Instead, try some of these natural remedies.
- Steam the Skin
Just as with blackheads, steaming your face is a great natural way to remove whiteheads. The steam from the boiling water (see step 1 under blackheads for full method) helps to open up your pores and therefore promote the removal of any bacteria, oil or skin cells that might be trapped there.
- Lemon Juice
Take a cotton pad and put some diluted or undiluted lemon juice onto it. Apply the pad directly to the whitehead and the area around it. Leave it there for about 20 minutes.
The high acidic content of lemon juice means that it is able to dry out the skin around the whitehead, remove any oil and therefore help to clear the breakout. Furthermore, lemon juice actually contains antibacterial compounds, and this is great for helping to reduce inflammation and in turn calm the whitehead, so it isn’t as noticeable.

- Apple Cider Vinegar
Many people use apple cider vinegar to help them lose weight, but did you know that it can also help to clear whiteheads. Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with about 8 ounces of clean water and apply this directly to the whitehead. Leave it there for about 20 minutes. Why not pop on your favourite YouTube channel whilst you wait!
Apple cider vinegar works in a similar way to lemon juice with how it is very acidic, and so therefore is able to dry out and shrink the pores to help unclog them and remove whiteheads. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial so can help to calm the whitehead and remove some of the germs it contains.
- Honey
We’ve already spoken about the great hydrating properties of honey, but this isn’t all it does. Honey also has antibacterial properties, which means it can help to kill the bacteria residing within and on the whitehead to help clear it. It’s very sticky and thick which means that it is able to really sink into the pores so that those antibacterial and hydrating properties of honey can really reach deep into your skin.
All you need to do is take a tablespoon of honey and pop it into the microwave for about 15 seconds until it is warm to touch. Cleanse your face and then apply the honey all over your face, leaving it on for 15 minutes before you wash it off.
