COST OF IN VITRO FERTILIZATION

The costs of IVF vary by clinic depending on if you are using a third party, frozen eggs, and by how many cycles you purchase up front from the fertility clinic. This is often a good choice because many clinics may have full or partial refund policies should you have success with your first cycle. Costs and fees may also vary based on the age of your egg donor or surrogate, as women over 35 have more fertility risks. That said, The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) lists the average price of one in vitro fertilization(IVF) cycle in the U.S. to be $12,400. (ASRM does not qualify if this includes medications.)

One Cycle with Egg Donor and Surrogate: $10,000 – $20,000

One Cycle with Surrogate or Egg Donor: $9,000 – $15,000

One IVF Cycle with Sperm Donor: $6,000 – $10,000

Average Cost of an IVF cycle using fresh embryos (not including medications): $8,158; Median Cost: $7,500

Embryo freezing and storage: The cost of freezing and storing embryos will depend on the clinic and how long you will store the embryos. That said ,the cost can vary widely, from around $200/year to thousands of dollars.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), genetic testing of embryos for abnormalities: $3,550; Median Cost: $3,200. This procedure is a necessary procedure performed during IVF.

Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedure: $1,544; Median Cost: $1,500. This procedure is not typically necessary, but may be performed if there is a question of the sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg, due to either a low sperm count or poor quality of the sperm. It consists of taking an individual sperm and injecting it directly into the egg.

Medications: $3,000 – $5,000 per fresh cycle on average.

Refund programs

If you/your surrogate does not have a positive pregnancy after 3 or 4 cycles of IVF, many fertility clinics will refund part of your money. Check with your individual fertility clinics for rates or information.

Mini-IVF

A relatively new technique that some fertility clinics offer is Minimal-Stimulation IVF, or Mini-IVF. This procedure is designed to harvest fewer but still high-quality eggs from a donor or mother, with less hormone injections and medications. Mini-IVF typically costs much less than traditional IVF, mostly because you do not have to pay as much for medications and injections.
