If you plan an adoption in the US through an adoption agency, you can be open about your partnership and family, and the agency will help match you to prospective birth mothers. However, agencies may hold different policies for gay and lesbian couples, therefore it is best to choose agencies that are GLBT-friendly from the start. Most agencies, if not all, have comprehensive services that provide you the resources you need and guide you through the steps of the adoption process.
If you are a transgender spouse or parent looking to adopt, you may face even further challenges. Although there are no specific laws barring transgender person from adopting, there are a few things you might try to increase your chances of adopting. Please see Transgender Adoption for more information.
