Fertility Clinics and Hospitals in NYC

Many gay and lesbian families, such as gay men who are embarking on the surrogacy process or lesbians who would like to both be biologically connected to their baby, will begin their process by consulting a fertility center that performs assisted reproduction technology (ART). Others, such as lesbian couples, may try at-home insemination with no luck or discover one or both partners has fertility issues, and end up turning to a reproductive specialist for help getting pregnant. When you are beginning this process, especially if you are facing infertility issues or are beginning the IVF or ART process, it’s important that you find a reproductive center that understands your needs as a gay or lesbian couple (or single gay man or lesbian). It’s also important that you can trust they will treat you and your family with respect and offer you professional services. We’ve compiled the download on fertility clinics and reproductive care for the gay community here.

As a resource to our readers, we would like to collect your experiences here. If you have had used one of the clinics above and had either a positive or negative experience, please share here in the comments.

For example, we received the following review of Weill Cornell Medical College in NYC via email:
My wife and I choose Weill Cornell. We got pregnant with 1 unmedicated IUI so they did a great job with monitoring but in terms of dealing with us as a same sex couple Cornell was terrible (refused to leave monitoring reports with my wife even when I asked in advance and was unable to answer the calls due to being on trial, made me sign the single, unmarried consent forms even though we are legally married etc).

It is time to update this list as I have been to both Columbia-Presbyterian and Weill-Cornell’s clinics and found both to lack any sensitivity or familiarity with options for insemination using a known donor. It is easy to see that the laws and regulations in NY are homophobic but the policies of these clinics add insult to injury not to mention innumerable fees for out-of-network providers instead of allowing patients to see in-network providers and accepting their assessments e.g. psychological consult. The cryobank at Weill Cornell is “not licensed” to handle known donor samples (quarantine). How is this inclusive or sensitive?
