Cost of Private Adoption

Cost: $4,000 – $30,000

The agency fee for private domestic adoption typically covers most of the costs you will incur (outlined below).  If you look at these costs and see your life savings swirling into a baby-shaped black hole, know that there are many agencies that offer payment plans or a sliding scale of fees depending on your income. For example, an agency may ask for a fee that is 15% of your annual income, as determined by your last income tax filing.

Here are the costs charged by a typical private agency for a domestic adoption:

  • Application $100- 500
  • Home Study $700 – $2,500
  • Birth parent counseling: $500 – $2,000
  • Adoptive parent preparation and training (This might include a psychiatric evaluation and/or physical): $300 – $600
  • Legal and Court Fees to Finalize Adoption: $2,500 to $12,000
  • Agency Fee (Varies)

Note: If Using Facilitated/unlicensed Agency Service. These costs are generally the same as costs of licensed agencies. However, in states that allow adoptive placements by facilitators these placements are largely unregulated. You have no recourse if the adoption does not proceed as expected. In short, it is not recommended to use an unlicensed agency or adoption “facilitators”.
